Alan Thompson
Partner
Alan Thompson

Licenciado en Derecho, University of Costa Rica (Honors, 1985); Master of Laws, Harvard University (1988). Admitted to the Costa Rican Bar Association since 1985.

He has extensive knowledge and experience in matters of Administrative and Regulatory Law. He had a prominent role as General Counsel in the creation of the Costa Rican Ministry of Foreign Trade (1994-1997) and the Housing Mortgage Bank, a public financial entity (1987-1990). He assisted in drafting key laws and regulations related to banking and foreign trade. He was a senior government advisor in the implementation of CAFTA-DR and other trade agreements, as well as in several international investment disputes. He has also served as board member in regulatory boards, including the Superintendence of Financial Institutions (SUGEF) and the Antitrust Commission (COPROCOM).

He has extensive knowledge and experience in transactional matters related to Corporate Law and Financial Services Law, and has provided advice on such matters to both national and multinational corporations and financial entities.

He has served on the boards and board committees of several major firms and financial institutions.

He has performed numerous consulting projects for the Inter-American Development Bank and other multilateral organizations and governments.

He has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Costa Rica and currently at Lead University in San José.

Alberto Fernández-López

Alberto Fernández-López

Licenciado en Derecho, University of Costa Rica (1985); Master in Business Administration with emphasis on International Business, National University, San Diego/San José Campus (1990). Admitted to the Costa Rican Bar Association since 1985.

He has extensive experience in litigation and arbitration, both locally and internationally. He is a member of the most important arbitration centers in Costa Rica, and also member of the Spanish Arbitration Club-Costa Rica and ICC-Costa Rica. He provides legal advice to major companies in the construction, agribusiness and distribution business.

In recent years, his practice has focused on sophisticated court and arbitral proceedings, both civil and commercial. He is an expert in Alternative Dispute Resolution and has attended several ICC-certified courses on the matter. He also has significant experience in dealing with major public infrastructure projects, FIDIC contracts and construction contract claims.

He has been described by Who’s Who Legal as “a true dispute resolution specialist whose impressive practice encompasses litigation, arbitration and mediation.”

Silvia García

Silvia García

Licenciada en Derecho, Universidad Autónoma de Centroamérica (Summa Cum Laude Probatus, 1989); Specialization in Commercial Law, University of Costa Rica (Honors, 1992); Master in Economic Law with emphasis on International Trade, Universidad Estatal a Distancia (2001). Admitted to the Costa Rican Bar Association since 1989.

She is experienced in Commercial Law, contracts, corporate governance, intellectual property and unfair competition cases. She provides advice to domestic and foreign clients on contracts, corporate governance and intellectual property.

Bernardo Mata

Bernardo Mata

Licenciado en Derecho, University of Costa Rica (2008). Admitted to the Costa Rican Bar Association since 2008.

He has broad experience in matters of Corporate Law, contracts, real estate transactions and litigation, and provides advice to local and foreign clients on those areas.

Gabriela Guzmán

Gabriela Guzmán

Licenciada en Derecho, University of Costa Rica (2016). Admitted to the Costa Rican Bar Association since 2016.

She handles judicial collection proceedings for financial entities. She also handles matters of Corporate Law within the firm.

Irene Arguedas

Irene Arguedas

Licenciada en Derecho, University of Costa Rica (Honors, 1990); Master in Common Law Studies with emphasis on International Trade Law (Georgetown University, 1995). Admitted to the Costa Rican Bar Association since 1995.

She has extensive knowledge and experience in topics of International Trade, Foreign Investment and Government Affairs. Among others, she served as Director of Investment (2010-2014) and Director of International Trade Negotiations (2003-2005) at the Costa Rican Ministry of Foreign Trade, as well as Minister Counselor for Economic and Trade Affairs at the Costa Rican Embassy in Washington D.C. (1998-2001). She has also served in regional positions for several major corporations, including transnational corporations operating in Central America and the Caribbean.
